Introducing MIT App Inventor

So you want to make mobile apps?  In this enrichment series, you can do just that!  We will be using MIT App Inventor©, a beginner development program.  MIT App inventor© is run inside a browser window and will use a block-based language.  I recommend using Chrome or Firefox when working with App inventor to receive the best results.  Before beginning a tutorial, follow the steps below or watch the videos to the right to setup your computer and Android device.

Running MIT App Inventor© On Your Own Computer:

  1. Make sure you are using Google Chrome or Firefox as your internet browser.

  2. Open a new tab and copy and paste the following URL to open the developer environment:  http://ai2.appinventor.mit.edu/

  3. Sign-In with your @bloomsd.org Google credentials to create your own MIT App Inventor© account.

  4. You should now be inside the developer environment and your screen should look like this:

Setting up Your Mobile Device For Testing:

There are 2 options for testing your app as you move through the design process:

  1. Test apps with an Android device over wifi (RECOMMENDED) INSTRUCTIONS

  2. Don't have an Android device?  Use the built-in emulator.  INSTRUCTIONS

Getting Started Videos

1. Opening the Developer In the Browser

2. Connect Android Phone Or Tablet Over Wifi

3.  Developer Interface Walkthough

**If you don't have wifi and would like to try these enrichment projects, please notify the school and we can try to accommodate.  This will require the installation of the developer environment directly to your computer and tethering an Android device to your computer via USB for testing purposes.
